CS06. Walkable access and bikeability to UPC campus

Healyhy Campus. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of walkability and bikeability to access the campus using geoinformation systems, with its subsequent identification of potentialities and proposal of policy recommendations.

At UPC, commuting of students and personnel contributes to 65% of the total annual emissions. The University commitment with sustainability leads to the need of moving towards a sustainable mobility. Walking and cycling to travel to university campuses can constitute an efficient, doable and game-changing solution. This thesis consists on performing a comprehensive analysis on the accessibility by foot and bike to the UPC campuses, using geoinformation tools (QGIS). A set of indicators are to be selected to measure the quality and quantity of the walkable and bikeable infrastructure (or built environment) found in the urban context of the campus. This project contributes to the CampusLab initiative, which applies the concept of the campus as a test bed to evaluate ambitious actions in a real-life environment.

Tasks to develop

  • Define the indicators to measure the quantity and quality of cyclist and pedestrian infrastructure found in the urban context
  • Select specific UPC campuses as case studies.
  • Analyse the level of service of the accesses to campuses by bycicle and on foot, using georeferenced information tools.
  • Identify strengths and potentials from which recommendations can be drawn to improve accessibility to UPC campuses by bicycle and walking.
  • Conduct a user perception survey (Stated Preference Survey), if necessary.
  • Characterize the relationship between bikeability and walkability levels and the modal share to tavel to campus.

 Resources associated with the offer

  • Information of UPC campuses and their geographic and urban surroundings.
  • Site and floor plans of the UPC campuses.
  • Resources and tools to conduct the analysis with QGIS software.
  • Data from UPC mobility survey and about place of origin of the students.
  • UPC Sustainable Mobility Policy (2015) [Catalan] (obriu en una finestra nova)
